Baring any last minute change of mind, Dr. Okumi Andoh, the former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Takoradi Technical University, will be the Parliamentary Candidate (PC) for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ahanta West Constituency of the Western Region. This is because the remaining contender, Ebenezer Aidoo has also withdrawn from the race.

It will be recalled that the NDC, after the demise of the Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency, George Kwame Aboagye, released a list of three person out of which the party will settle on one to be the PC. The list included Dr Okumi Andoh; the current constituency Chairman of the party, Ebenezer Aidoo; the first runner up in the primaries held last year, and Ebenezer Essien; a former Assembly member for the Aboadi electoral area.

A day after the list was released, Ebenezer Essien released a statement to communicate his withdrawal from the race, and gave his support for Dr. Okumi Andoh to be appointed as the PC. This meant that the choice was going to be made out of the remaining two; Dr. Okumi Andoh, and Ebenezer Aidoo. Many people predicted that Kofi Aidoo will be given the nod because of his youthful age, and his close association with former president Mahama.

However, to the surprise of many people in the constituency, Kofi Aidoo also released a statement yesterday that he has withdrawn from the race.

“Upon series of reflections and consultation with my family, my supporters, chiefs, party elders, and other stake holders of our great party, I would like to step down for my father, Dr.  Emmanuel Okumi Andoh, our current constituency  chairman, to be appointed as the Parliamentary Candidate to succeed the late George Kwame Aboagye, who I called the Champion of Ahanta West Politics,” part of his statement stated.

According to him, his decision to step is borne out of his love for the NDC, and has subsequently pledged his total support to Dr. Okumi Andoh to succeed as the PC for the party in Ahanta West.

“My reason for stepping down at this crucial moment is in the supreme interest of our party and the general Ahanta Municipality, as the call for change echoes on our land.

“I pledge my full 100% support towards the campaign and I assure him that I will commit the very last resource that I have in the campaign,” he stated.

This development paves way for Dr. Okumi Andoh, to step down as the party’s constituency Chairman to become the party’s Parliamentary Candidate. He will be expected to win the seat again for the NDC.
