Road Signs especially in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis has been vandalized with advertising posters making it difficult for road users to decode the messages on them.
This has become the norm for some citizens in the country especially the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis as road safety signs has become the new billboard of advertisement.
The subject of road signs being vandalised with advertising posters has not being emphasised enough to get the whole citizenry to police this act. We believe the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) and the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) are vividly aware of this and what are they doing about it?
This problem retards National Development as it will increase the rate of road accidents in the Metropolis. We are aware STMA and EKMA is responsible for inappropriate mounting of billboards in the Metropolis and are swift to react to an illegal billboard but how swift are they reacting to posters vandalising road safety signs? Don’t they notice road signs being covered with posters? Is it not right to stop people who engage in these acts? The STMA and EKMA can easily locate offenders of these laws since most of the posters, posted on the sign boards contain information of the individuals who commit this act. Are they even trying to?
Also, the National Road and Safety Commission must create public awareness to educate citizens on the fact that, advertisements posted on road safety signs is very wrong and has a higher probability of causing road accidents on our roads. This awareness must be all over the media, in every part of the country to alert the citizens and make everyone conscious of this deadly act which they themselves can remove posters on road signs or report offenders of this act.
As the normal Ghanaian attitude goes, waiting for a tragedy caused by this inappropriate act before we react by educating, removing posters and also bringing offenders to book. We can act now to save lives of citizens in the future and not until there is a fatality.
