Westside Carnival makes Christmas in Takoradi ‘unmissable ‘ – Patrons
Many participants at this year’s Westside Masquerade Carnival (Westside Carnival) have described the event as one no one can miss for any other event in the entire nation. They have labelled the event as the Christmas Event for Ghana, as, per their estimation, there is no other programme that comes close to it throughout Ghana.
According to these participants, attending the Westside Carnival is one of the priority things they look up to doing during the yuletide. Some of them described the event as ‘unavailable’, adding that missing the event is like missing the oxygen that makes Christmas what it is.
Jamal, a regular attendee, told Skyy News he always looks forward to Christmas in Takoradi because of the Westside Carnival. He says he does not miss it for anything during Christmas.
“This is an event I always look up to during Christmas. No matter what I’m doing, or wherever I am, I always make attending the Carnival a priority. I don’t miss it, and I never will,” he stated.
About thirty masquerading groups from Sekondi-Takoradi participated in this year’s parade, which saw the groups showcase their unique clothes and artistry to the world. The various groups thrilled people, who had come from far and near, with their respective unique dancing skills, and at a point, causing some of first timers to start learning their dance moves.
The masquerading groups, each took turns to educate the gathering about what they had done during the year, and what they plan to do in the coming year. Some of the groups had given scholarships to some of their members. Others too had given free legal services to their members.
The 2019 edition of the Carnival had performances from Kofi Kinaata, Obaapa Christie, Nero X, Ayesem, and Quesi Ghana.
Obaapa Christie set the night going with some energetic performances, keeping the hundreds of thousand participants one their feet, singing along all her hit tracks. Her stage prowess came in handy, and she really made a huge statement about her being one of Ghana’s great gospel artistes.
The response from the people when the headline artiste, Kofi Kinaata took the stage, it proved that he is undoubtedly the toast of Ghanaians. From his entry around 1:30am to his exit, people never showed signs of weariness. His performances got the Regional Minister and the MCEs on their feet throughout the time.
The night also saw an awesome performance by international award winning band based in the Western Region, Nativ Afrik Band.
The year’s event had the Regional Minister, Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Sekondi-Takoradi, Anthony K.K. Sam, and the Municipal Chief Executive for Effia-Kwesimintsim, being in attendance till the show came to an end around 3am on Friday.
The 2019 Westside Masqueraders Carnival, as always, had Ghana’s leading telecommunications company, MTN, as the Headline Sponsor.
