The General Manager of Goldfields Tarkwa Mine, says the company wants to create value beyond mining.
He says though the core mandate of the company is to mine, they believe in the shared value and have the responsibility to make sure that people in their catchment areas are appreciated.
Mr Steven Osei Bempah said this when the company engaged the media on their corporate social responsibilities of the company.
He said they are mindful of the impact of their activities on the environment and they will make sure that the communities become part of their success.
Among the flagship projects initiated by the company at Damang and Tarkwa are the 2 storey building girls’ dormitory at the Huni Valley Senior High School, an Emergency ward at the Apinto Government Hospital and the ongoing Tarkwa Sports Stadium, completion of a 27 million dollar 33km asphalt road from Tarkwa /Bogoso Junction to Damang, provision of boreholes and the construction of Health centres to host communities as well as provision of farm inputs for farmers.
Mr Osei Bempah added that the company since it began its operation has invested about 66.5 million in the catchment communities,their dreams and future adding that they will continue engaging stake holders for more development to happen in the communities.
The two-day media engagement brought together some selected Journalists across the Western Region.
Mr.Osei Bempah said through the Goldfields Ghana foundation,a dollar is set aside on every ounce of gold they produce which is used for social projects.
Led by the mining officers, Journalists were taken to the mining and tailing sites of the Goldfields Tarkwa Mine on the operations of the company.
