With the sizes of potholes on some major roads in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis getting worse and motorists complaining each day, Skyy Power FM’s JBS sought to find out why most of these roads are in such deplorable conditions.

According to Ing. Abdulai Mahama, a road and building consultant, there are many reasons for the roads being in such a sorry state.

Speaking to Naomi Afriyie Nyanor on the JBS he said motorists, both private and commercial, do not pay heed to road signs and do not drive at the appropriate speed limits, thus residents are compelled to make unapproved speed rumps on the roads. This he stated, results in most of the potholes that are seen on the roads.

He said, “Because the drivers don’t pay heed to road signs and drive carefully, the citizens are compelled to mount speed ramps on the road which is a major cause of potholes on our roads.”

“When the drivers get to the speed ramps, they have to break and after climbing it they speed it, these movements by the vehicles affect the roads badly leading it to develop speed ramps.”

Outlining some solutions to curb the issue of potholes on the major roads in the metropolis, he said there should be a need for the government to discipline drivers by providing dominant CCTV cameras on the roads for drivers to be conscious when driving as the government will make money out of it.

He also suggested that the Department of urban roads and Ghana Highway Authority provide machines used to check express weights on the roads.

“As a solution to that, the government can make so much money from indiscipline, they can make the CCTV government dominant, and put people in charge in the control room and every driver who breaks the rule charged in court.”
