The President of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Council said it will soon be compulsory for every household to plant trees in their homes.
Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, said he would encourage, monitor and supervise the chiefs to ensure that trees planted on the National Tree planting day will meet the goal of reducing the rate of forest destruction in the country.
‘’Nananom will have to meet very soon and make it mandatory. Each household should plant a tree in the house. We are going to have a traditional Council meeting and make it mandatory.
“We are going to press upon them. Some of the chiefs will go from area to area, where they will visit to see how the trees are doing.
If we see any shortfall, we will quickly have to meet and take steps to remedy the situation. If you go to some part of this area and walk about 5 blocks, there is no tree and this is not helping’’.
Kofi Kyei, the District Manager applauded the people of Wassa Akropong for their tremendous support towards the planting of trees and its reservations.
He said the district planted about 80,000 trees during the Greening Ghana Project and himself and his team have established a post-management system that will ensure the survival of planted trees.
‘’What the post-planting management seeks to do is to guide all the trees planted to prevent them from dying. When you plant 100 trees not all of them will survive. We are aiming at survival rate between 95 and 100’’.
The District Manager added that, planting of trees in the district is not an individual responsibility but a collective responsibility hence assembly members, school authorities and church leaders must plant and monitor the trees.
Mr. Kyei indicated the presence of the trees in the district will reduce harmful gases such as smoke, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and others.
Mahmud Mohammed- Nurudeen revealed that he was worried about the lack of tree in and around the homes of Wassa Akropong so he wants to see new trees being planted under his tenure of office to help government’s effort to Green Ghana.
