STMA COVID-19 Taskforce storms market circle, enforces wearing of face mask, et al

A Joint Operations Taskforce on the COVID-19 Response Team of the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly yesterday, stormed the central business district of Takoradi [Market Circle], to enforce compliance on the wearing of facial or nose masks.

The team comprising of officers from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Information Service Department and the various security agencies did a random check on persons in and around the market and other offices, to get residents adhere to this mandatory act.

Metropolitan Coordinator for NADMO, James Obeng Junior who led the taskforce told Skyy News’ Jacob Baah that it’s become necessary given the rise in cases of COVID-19 infection in the metropolis, the Western Region and to a larger extent, the country.

He mentioned that the notoriety with which people breach these social distancing protocols and other directives must be checked.

“We’ve recorded some positive cases in Sekondi Takoradi… we have a case even at the Takoradi market circle. So the security council cannot sit down for this thing to continue”, he stressed.

Mr. Obeng Junior charged that residents ought to wear their nose masks anytime they step out of their home.

The exercise is expected to be undertaken at all other markets in the metropolis. As at this morning [6 May, 2020], the Sekondi Takoradi has been hit by eleven cases of coronavirus, together with other cases recorded in other districts, the Western Region has a total of 25 confirmed cases of the disease.
