Atleast, over three hundred and fifty (350) homes, schools and several other properties, amounting to several millions of Ghana cedis, have been destroyed in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region after a severe rainstorm hit parts of the Municipality on Wednesday 1st April 2020.

The storm which lasted less than an hour, started around 12:00 pm. According to the Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organization, Mr Adjei Kissi Osway, who confirmed the incident to Skyy news’s Mpimpimhene Nana Gyetuah, most residents affected have been rendered homeless.

The devastating nature of the storm affected over 300 homes, ripping off the roofs completely. More than seven schools including the Asankragwa Senior High School, were also affected whilst over five persons sustained severe injuries. One of them is a 7 year old girl who is currently receiving treatment at the Asankragwa government hospital.

“As I speak to you, the affected properties are uncountable, they are spread in all parts of the municipality. We started yesterday and up till today, we are still going round, assessing the situation. Some schools, over seven of them have been totally ripped off. We thank God all pupils are currently at home due to the coronavirus, else the situation would have been disastrous. We are still assessing the situation to know the exact number affected so that we can come out with a plan to assist them,” Mr. Adjei Kissi Osway noted.

Authorities of the municipality are currently going round to assess the situation and to sympathize with the affected victims, with an assurance of support from the municipality, as they work to secure more support from some organizations and individuals.
