Railway salary arrears cleared, more capital injected to boost operations
The Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) has commended government for clearing the salary arrears of staff. The company has been unable to meet its obligation to pay workers salaries for three months, a situation which has caused disaffection among workers.
Through the effort of the Minister for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, government is giving a financial injection to support the operations of the company from this year to March next year, whilst the company begins to improve its service delivery in the haulage of manganese from Nsuta of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.
On behalf of Management and Staff of the GRCL, Acting Managing Director, John Essel said the intervention by government is commendable, and that “the facility will also take care of staff salaries and other related expenses up to the end of March, 2021.
“Within that period, GRCL will work hard to become self-sufficient” he assured.
Mr. Essel continued that “Management and Workers of Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) would like to express their appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Ghana led by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo assisted by the sector Minister, Hon. Joe Ghartey (MP Essikadu Keten) for the Capital Injection into the company this year, part of which was used to pay the three months’ salary arrears of workers”
Mr. Essel indicated that the capital injection will boost their operations, particularly on the Western Rail Lines, as they resume hauling manganese ore from Nsuta to the Takoradi Port.
“Through the effort of the Government, GRCL will soon take delivery of track tools, spare parts and equipment which were imported by Ghana Manganese Company Limited a while ago to facilitate the rehabilitation of five locomotives and several mineral wagons to augment the current fleet of manganese trains to increase the haulage of manganese ore from Nsuta to the Takoradi port for export. This, when done will boost the fortunes of GRCL through increase in revenue. Management and Workers of GRCL hereby thank the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo for the continuous support for GRCL” he noted.
