The recent rise in the price of commodities has affected almost every sector of the economy. The building and construction sector isn’t an exemption.
Prices of building materials are still on the increase despite many of them being produced locally in the country.
Now the price for a bag of cement ranges between 80cedis and 100 cedis, depending on the choice of brand one may prefer. A ton of iron rod also ranges between 60 cedis to 70 cedis.
A double axel for gravel ranges between 3,800 cedis and 4,000 cedis whereas, a double axel of quarry dust may cost the buyer between a range of 3,300 cedis and 3, 500 cedis.
A trip of sand may differ with the axel preference. A double-axel of sand will cost the buyer between 1500 cedis and 1800 cedis. But for a single axel, one may be lucky to get it from 700 cedis to 800 cedis.
In an interview with some dealers in the sand business, they told Skyy News that the current economic situation is responsible for the increase in prices we are witnessing today.
According to them, this has made them resort to reducing it to the level where customers can purchase any amount that they can afford be it in a tricycle, wheelbarrow, headpan, or even a shovel.
They noted that in the quest to stay in business, they had to think about ways that their customers no matter their economic status can have the purchasing power to buy from them.
A seller said, “Looking at the economy at the moment, things have really gone bad and we are trying to adjust to the situation and help our buyers to be able to purchase our goods.”
“In this situation, we have tried to reduce some of the prices of our materials and even, sell the goods at a reduced quantity to give our buyers a chance to also purchase the materials because the economy has affected us all badly.”
They, therefore, called on the government to subsidise building materials in order to reduce the prices and help citizens purchase goods for their projects.
