Mr Frederick Mensah Acheampong, Director of Administration at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), has underscored the need for all to as a matter of importance plant a tree to secure their lives tomorrow.
He said trees played a vital role in the lives of human beings and it was critical to take advantage of Green Ghana Day, an initiative under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to enrich the land.
The Nationwide initiative is aimed at planting five million trees across the country to restore forest reserves, water bodies, beautify and sustain the environment.
Planting a tree to mark the day at the Hospital, Mr Acheampong said the CCTH planted some of the trees ahead of the day and had so far planted 1,500 trees of different species on its stretch of land to raise vegetation for the populace.
“We have assigned special people to see to the growth of these plants, to water and nurture them till they become fully grown trees.”
Accounting for the cause of land degradation in the country, Mr Samuel Asare Tieku, the Director of Finance, said the land had lost its vegetation because of illegal mining activities and urbanization.
He said planting over five million trees in the region would help replenish and restore the forest cover that the country had lost over the years.
Mrs Sophia Blankson, the Director of Nursing, said plantations gave more light to the environment and it was appropriate to give the day the full recognition it needed.
Lauding the initiative, she said aside from making the country green, trees give life by aiding in respiratory processes necessary for life.
