President Nana Addo’s claim of having settled backlogs of claims from service providers owed under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) have been given credit by the Medical Superintendents Group of Ghana (MSG). According to the group government has settled a substantial amount of its indebtedness, one that has been described as ‘unprecedented’ since 2009.
President of MSG, Dr. Joseph Tambil in a media briefing after a Council Meeting said outstanding debt owed by government currently is for just about six months. He thus commended government for being proactive with the payment, adding that it has eased the burden of health facilities and administrators across the country.
“This is the best that any government has done since 2009 and we want to urge to keep this up, and also ensure that its also improved. The ideal is that the NHIA claims backlog will be reduced to about three months in line with the procurement” Dr. Tambil emphasised.
The issue of government’s indebtedness had lingered for long and thus become a major topical issue in the Ghanaian politics.
He also took the opportunity to commend government for being responsive in resourcing health centers with logistic amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
