The Western Region Masqueraders Federation has advised all masqueraders groups to make sure all their members are vaccinated against COVID-19 ahead of the biggest Carnival in Ghana, Westside Carnival.

The Carnival hosted by Skyy Power 93.5FM and sponsored by MTN Ghana is the biggest carnival in Ghana in terms of the attention it commands worldwide with tourists from all walks of life making their way to Sekondi-Takoradi just to have a glimpse of it.

The over 22-year-old tradition has come a long way from the days when it was frowned upon by some residents of Sekondi-Takoradi due to their costume and scary masks that were worn in addition to it as most people who engaged themselves were termed as non-serious.

The narration for masqueraders have changed over the years since Skyy Power FM and MTN Ghana got involved as they modernised, commercialised and made it more family-friendly and recognised worldwide to attract thousands of audience annually on December 25th and 26th through the Westside Carnival.

As it has grown to become a Festival for people in the Western Region, The Western Regional Minister, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah partook in the 2019 edition including some other high profile individuals in the region.

As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, the 2020 edition was put on hold to avoid the spread of the virus but since there has been the development of a vaccine, members are advised to get vaccinated ahead of the Carnival for safety purposes and a COVID free Christmas, the Western Region Masqueraders Federation noted on Skyy Power FM on Monday, November 22.
