The Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old father for an alleged attempt to sell his daughter at Agona Asafo in the Agona East District of the Central Region.
The suspect, Samuel Kobena Agyemang, aka Oscar the farmer, was said to have planned to sell his 2-year-old daughter and use the money to travel to the capital since life was unbearable for him in the village.
According to police sources, the suspect confided in some friends to look for potential buyers after making up his mind on the plan.
Further information states that Samuel Agyemang divorced his wife some months ago and went for her daughter on her blind side.
His friends reported him to the police on August 15, 2022, after persistently mounting pressure on them to look for potential buyers.
“They started bargaining for the price and the unsympathetic father agreed to sell his biological daughter for 20,000 Ghana cedis,” it said.
The amount was fully paid to Agyemang, the child was taken away by the police, and the father was arrested.
“His wife had divorced him so the only thing left is to sell his daughter and travel to Accra to do business with the money,” the source added.
The suspect has been remanded into prison custody by the Agona Swedru Circuit Court after pleading not guilty to a charge of attempting the sale of his daughter and will reappear on September 1, 2022.
Chief Inspector Isaac Amon, the prosecutor said the accused was a native of Aburi Akuapim and a resident at Agona Asafo, near Agona Swedru.
