In the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality town of Bonsawire, seven out of nine people who were reportedly working in an illegal mining mine perished by being crushed to death.
The other two were hurt in varying degrees and are now undergoing treatment at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.
Four ladies and three men were among the fatalities, and their remains were all sent to the mortuary of the same hospital for preservation and an autopsy.
According to Mr. Francis Amoah, Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the occurrence occurred on Saturday, September 23, 2023, and he verified this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
He claimed that when the pit collapsed, the ladies were reportedly bringing the sand containing gold known as (load) out of it.
He said that their coworkers nearby swiftly banded together and went in search of an excavator machine to aid in rescuing the individuals stuck in the hole.
Six of the nine people were found dead and three injured after the rescue squad worked for hours, according to Mr Amoah, although one died on the way to the hospital.
It was emphasised by the NADMO Coordinator that an inquiry had started because it was unknown what caused the pit to collapse.
