Road safety is the responsibility of everyone. The rate of road accidents in the country has been described as outrageous since the number of innocent Ghanaians being killed keeps increasing by the day.
Drivers are supposed to drive at a speed limit of 50km when approaching a community but that has not been the case for some of them.
Pedestrians who are also considered as road users suffer from such drivers. There have been several instances where pedestrians have been killed by speeding drivers but refuse to stop and convey their victims to the hospital.
One of such hit-and-run drivers has killed a pedestrian in cold blood at Ewusiejoe, a community close to Takoradi in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.
The incident happened on the evening of Sunday, April 18, 2021, at around 7 Pm.
Confirming the news, Western Region Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Division (MTTD), Chief Superintendent Isaac Kwesi Sorkpah described the accident as unfortunate.
According to him, the driver involved is immediately unknown but he has instructed all police personal at the various barriers in the region to fetch him out.
“I can confirm the news but unfortunately the vehicle is not yet known.
However, I have asked the Police on duty at the various barriers to look out for vehicles with any trace of an accident”. Chief Superintendent Isaac Kwesi Sorkpah noted.
The lifeless body of the young man whose identity has not been confirmed is seen in a picture lying in cold blood along the road. The resident in the area could not help since the driver was on top speed.
Pedestrian knockdowns have been described by the Ghana Road Safety Department as one of the ways through which accident claims lives.
Pedestrians have been advised on several platforms to look out for oncoming vehicles before they cross the road.
