The President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II has proposed that the numerous Chieftaincy disputes in the Country can only end if the courts reduce the number of days in hearing the various cases.
According to him, some of the chieftaincy cases last for many years in courts due to misunderstandings between the parties involved.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi was speaking in a telephone interview with Takoradi-based Skyy Power FM. He indicates that the cases can be reduced if the election petition hearing strategy is adopted.
He says, the Supreme Court justices who were sitting on the election petition case decided on a time frame to begin and end the case.
He adds that none of the political parties involved were able to influence the time. He says such decisions can also be taken by the various courts in the country to clear all cases involving chieftaincy disputes in the country.
“We can stop the long pending chieftaincy disputes if we adopt the strategy of the election petition modalities. In the election petition, a number of days were set by the judges for the case to be heard and they did a lot of things to ensure the time frame is not flouted. That’s how the election petition was delivered timely. So now we have a lot of chieftaincy disputes pending in court for many years and that is affecting development. Disputes are very expensive. I will propose that we adopt the election petition Strategy to end them”. He noted.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi who is a former President of the Western Region House of Chiefs bemoaned the absence of a representative from the western region in the National house of Chiefs due to disputes.
He described the situation as disturbing and indicated that there are plans to ensure the issue is solved.
“I have always been disturbed about the numerous disputes in the Western Region and the fact that they don’t have a President to represent the house. They don’t even have a council. The staff at the place are unable to work and that is a huge issue. I’m very disturbed and will make sure the case is resolved peacefully. We are trying but the parties are not cooperating”. He added.
