COVID 19: Takoradi Market Circle and others to be fumigated- Mayor

The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, beginning Thursday 19 March, 2020, will fumigate market places, in a bid to curtail the novel COVID 19 infestation. The exercise though a monthly routine, have had to be fast-tracked amidst the COVID 19 pandemic, for the rest of the days this week.

Mayor of the City, Anthony Kobina Korantsir Sam, at a press briefing this morning on the assembly’s preparedness to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus indicated that markets, transport terminals, public toilets and baths, and other public spaces will be covered in the coming fumigation exercise.

He disclosed that the Environmental Health Department will undertake the exercise in the Takoradi Market Circle on Thursday 19 March, 2020, whiles the Sekondi and Kojokrom Markets will be done on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 March, 2020, respectively.

“Fumigation at other markets in various communities will follow in due course” he added.

The Assembly with support of the Information Services Department and the National Commission for Civic Education will embark on an intensive socio-education campaign on COVID 19 preventive measures.

“All Sub-metros have also been tasked to liaise with the market queens within their jurisdiction to consider the possibility of mounting hand washing facilities in the various markets” the Mayor added.


Closure of Public Washrooms

To compliment efforts taken by the assembly, an order has been issued for the closure of all public toilets and bath facilities, which are deemed to be in insanitary or poor condition. This action shall come into force by tomorrow Wednesday march 18, 2020.

The Environmental Health Unit will follow up with a directive to operators of facilities that will not be closed down to fumigate their premises before close of this month.
