COVID-19: Gold Fields honours pledge to restock Tarkwa Nsuaem with extra PPE

Gold Fields Ghana Limited has honoured its pledge to the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Health Directorate, by delivering a second batch of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to support frontline workers fight the novel coronavirus.

The items includes; 35,700 pairs of hand gloves, 5,200 pieces of N95 masks, 8,000 pieces of surgical masks, 70 hand held non-contact infra-red thermometers, and 80 pieces of safety goggles, and were handed over to the Municipal COVID-19 Committee.

Regional Manager Community Affairs for Gold Fields Gh. Ltd., Mr. Robert Siaw in his remarks as he presented the items, urged the assembly to reinforce measures as it makes best use of these items, to curtail the spread of infection.

He emphasized that the municipality ought to take preventive etiquette seriously, especially at a time when it has been identified as a hot spot for the disease.

“It is unfortunate that our municipality and region has been identified as a hot spot. That notwithstanding, we believe in the municipal COVID Committee that with the assistance we providing, they will stern the stem of tide of the spread.

“..and the pledge is to survive this pandemic, to protect our children, to protect our spouses, our colleague workers, friends and the general public” he said.

Mr. Siaw prayed that the expectations of the company is to have every life protected from this viral infection, and as much survive the pandemic until its no more.

“Gold fields wants to see everybody alive at the end of this pandemic”, he intimated.

Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Benjamin Kesse thanked the company for their continued support and promised to work with the respective authorities to make the best use of them.

“We are grateful for supporting the assembly in fighting this pandemic. We have taken custody of the material provided, and the technocrats together with myself will put them to good use. Everybody that deserves it will have some” he noted.

Mr. Kesse took the opportunity to admonish residents in the municipality to acknowledge the realities and threatening nature of the virus on society and lives. He urged residents to develop a positive attitude in admission of the dangers of this pandemic, a communal spirit to fight the virus.

“It is so unfortunate that our area has been declared an epicenter. And from what we hear from the experts the spread is communal and so clearly, everybody is at risk, and we cannot fight this pandemic the way we doing things these days.

“We have to admit that it’s real. Until we make these admissions we won’t take the protocols serious” Mr Kesse reiterated.

Health Director for the Municipality, Caroline Effah Otoo described Gold Fields Gh. Ltd., as a responsible entity, who has continually committed resources towards the health development of the people.

She noted that the support given by the company is just right to aid health workers protect themselves from the infection whiles they discharge their duties.

“…this all important PPE have come at a time where a number of our staff have been infected with COVID-19. In fact, when you look at the quantities, it is unprecedented” she said.

Gold Fields Ghana Limited had also promised to procure two ambulances for the Apinto  Government Hospital and the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital. These two ambulances, according to management will soon be delivered to support health service.
