The Electoral Commission has approved twelve (12) candidates out of the seventeen (17) that filed their nomination to contest the 2020 presidential elections. The five disappointed candidates had in common a charge of forgery of signatures, a case that has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for I estivation and possible prosecution.
The five disqualified candidates are; Akwasi Addae Odike (United Progressive Party), Kwasi Busumbru (People’s Action Party), Nana Agyenim Boateng (United Front Party), and two other independent candidates; Kofi Koranteng and Marricke Kofi Gane.
The Electoral Commission published these details as the basis for their disqualifications;
Kofi Koranteng
The EC found 19 persons who had allegedly supported the candidate to be CPP executives who had also supported the CPP candidate.
Some of these persons were called to ascertain the veracity of their endorsements. All the persons called denied having endorsed the candidate.
The CPP had officially written to the commission about the issue. The candidate had admitted the offense and the case is being forwarded to the CID.
Akwasi Addae Odike
Handwriting and signatures of different supporters followed the same identical pattern. The Issue has been confirmed by the CID, and has taken up the matter.
Kwesi Busumbru
Candidate failed to provide supporters for some districts in the Greater Accra regions,( Ga East, Ayawaso West,Okaikoi South).
Incomplete data of some Supporters.
Some of the supporters are not registered voters in the areas of authority of the district assembly to which they endorsed for.
Signature of same persons on four forms are different.
Despite a request to correct these errors the candidate failed to do as directed. CID has taken the matter up.
Marvericke Kofi Gane
The committee suspected the possibility of fraudulent signatures of some supporters. The handwriting and signatures of different supporters follow the same identical pattern.
CID confirmed signatures were forged. The case has been forwarded to the CID
Nana Agyenim-Boateng
Three of the persons who allegedly supported the candidate’s nomination namely; Samuel Kwame Borlu (3401013017-NDC Constituency Chairman, Shama), James Joe Ackon(3415000296-NDC Constituency Executive Member, Wassa East), and George Bamfo (3420000065- immediate past Chairman of NDC, Wassa East Constituency) have denied endorsing candidate’s nomination.
