Senior Political Scientist with the University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Owusu Mensah has scored that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang’s performance during the John Mahama administration as the Minister for Education, will be a major political stain in her credibility and public trust.
According to him, Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang as running mate for John Mahama for the 2020 election, could hinder their fortunes.
He explained that policy decisions that were taken at the time, which were deemed unfavourable for teachers, and among others would play out significantly to haunt the John Mahama- Jane Naana presidential contest on December 7.
“They will attribute all those policies John Mahama sanctioned to her… in terms of cancellation of teacher trainee allowances, salary arrears, ..all will play out in the 2020 elections, and unfortunately will not be in favour of the NDC because John Mahama was the President and she was the sector Minister. She cannot dissociate herself from those issues.” he clarified.
Albeit, Dr. Owusu Mensah observed that her introduction into the mainstream politics as a Vice Presidential Candidate, coupled with her expertise in educational matters, would present a more diverse perspective that could alternate Dr. Bawumia’s understanding of the economy.
“The good thing is that, this year’s election would be filled with lots of ideas because herself and Dr. Bawumia will be more engaging on issues…not necessarily comparing the two. Dr. Bawumia is an economist and she is an educationist, so it would be an argument of which of these areas [economy or education] matters to the Ghanaian people. This will make the elections more interesting” Dr. Mensah added.
