2019 Esikadu Kuntum takes off

The 2019 edition of the Kuntum festival for the people of Essikadu in the Essikadu Ketan constituency of the Western Region has kick start with a series of activities aimed at showcasing the rich African culture and heritage.

As expected, some African-Americans who trace their ancestry to the British Sekondi [Essikado] will return from the United States to witness the festival, and also renew their commitment to developing their community.

The Kuntum festival, according to history came about when a hunter on one of his usual expeditions saw some dwarfs in a forest at Ahanta Aboadze in the Western Region performing a dance which the hunter after observing and learned the dancing movements. It is said to have taught his community after returning from his hunt.

The festival which is mainly celebrated by the Ahantas and Nzemas and some parts of Ivory Coast is to engender communal spirit, promote oneness and togetherness as well as settle long standing family and community disputes.

The 2019 edition of the festival has already been launched. The festival will be climaxed by a durbar of chiefs and the people of Essikadu. Other activities lined up for the celebration include; Community clean-up exercise, Ebise Kyin moves, Vigil of the flames, Apado and communion, Earth day, Development Dialogue, Ebise Dancing competition, Medical screening, Thanksgiving and candle light procession.
