Two Nigerians were found guilty of robbery and given 40 years in prison with hard labour by the Kasoa Odupong Ofaakor Circuit Court.

On May 17, 2022, the police detained the two following an unsuccessful robbery attempt on a mobile money vendor at the Kasoa New Market intersection.

Bright Okwara and Ferdinand Obi, the two people who were found guilty, pled not guilty to both attempted robbery and robbery.

However, following a trial, the court presided over by Mr Ebenezer Osei Darko, found them guilty and gave each defendant a 20-year prison sentence.

On the day of the event, Mr Hassan Nuru Yaroh, a mobile money vendor, was attacked while trying to withdraw money from the bank for his business.

Chief Inspector Emmanuel Amponsah, the prosecutor, informed the court that Mr Yaroh had withdrawn GHC11,800 and was riding his motorcycle to a store when he saw another motorcycle following him.

He claimed that after becoming aware of his pursuers, Mr Yaroh made the decision to ride to the police station. Unfortunately, his motorcycle broke down, and the two eventually caught up with him.

The inmates quickly stole the cash and fled, but fortunately, Mr Yaroh’s bike had restarted. He pursued the inmates until they became stuck in traffic at the police station close to the market crossroads when he sounded an alarm to warn onlookers.

The prosecutor claims that the victim approached them, struck them with his bike, and took the money back.
